Moors and Christians Festival Calpe 2008

The month of October is the month of celebrations in Calpe. From October 2nd until 12th will be the Oktoberfest (German beer festival) and five days later, on October 17th, the Moors and Christians Festival and the Festivity in Honour of Calpe’s Patron Saint “Santísimo Cristo del Sudor” will start.

This month we can enjoy a very rooted tradition in Calpe, the Moors and Christians, that have been celebrated in the town since 1977, as well as the devotion and religious ceremonies that are held in honour of the town’s Patron Saint “Santísimo Cristo del Sudor” and also the Oktoberfest, a festival with which the German residents celebrate their tradition and that they share with all their neighbours. Amongst the activities celebrated during the Fiestas of the Moors and Christians in Honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Sudor, religious, popular and historical ceremonies are combined with great majesty and devotion. Amongst the most important ceremonies there are the entrance of the music bands, the hoisting of flags at the castle, the offering of candles, masses and processions in honour of the Patron Saint, the landing on the Arenal-Bol beach, representation of the “Miracle”, fire works show, street parties, children’s parade of moors and christians and the big Moors and Christians Parade.

The celebrations will start on October 17th with the Proclamation of the Festival and the Hoisting of Flags at the Plaza Mayor square at 8:30 p.m., followed by the street procession and offering of candles.

On Saturday October 18th at 7 p.m. there will be the Great Entry of Moors and Christians and fireworks on the Arenal-Bol beach.

On Sunday October 19th at 11 a.m. will be the landing and the First Battle on the Arenal-Bol beach.

Tuesday 21st of October at 9 p.m. will be the Parley and the Second Battle on the Arenal-Bol beach.

On Wednesday 22nd of October, the ceremonies in Honour of the  Santísimo Cristo del Sudor will start at 10:30 p.m. with the Solemn procession and afterwards the Big Fireworks Spectacle.
