The Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009, has not started yet but means an important change for Alicante.
The celebration of the start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 in Alicante, has entailed an unbelievable motivation for the city, that has been able to see how in a record time the port’s image has radically changed with the refurbishments and new constructions that have taken place.
This change was being continuously being delayed in the city of Alicante and the Volvo has given it a push, turning the city into a top-level nautical destination.
The choice of the city as starting port for the sailing ship world tour, the Volvo Ocean Race, means a financial impact of over 70 million Euros, a very big impact in the image of Alicante due to the improvements carried out in the city, mostly because of the media repercussion entailed by the fact of being the starting port for the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009.
In the port, the old station of Oran has been refurbished, a total transformation of the building, where the Ocean Race Club has been installed, with restaurants, cafés and terraces. The promenade has been enlarged by extending the quay wall about 500m and another extension of 300m, to serve as team bases. A raised prom has been built over the Postiguet beach and the project of the North access to the city has been completed.
The prospects can’t be better, about 1,000,000 visitors are expected to the Race Village, with the creation of about 1,500 direct and indirect workplaces and about 5,000 ships are expected to put out to the sea to see the regatta.
A deserved reward for all the effort done by Alicante. Now more city, more modern and more nautical than ever before. |
